The Punanga-Nui Markets were opened in 1992. For the grand opening, Prince Edward was in attendance and since then it has been open six days a week. After that it became a tradition in the community to head there on Saturday morning, for both tourists and locals.
The markets are downtown, next to Avatiu Harbour.
The markets have an abundance of local fresh fruit and vegies, plenty of arts and crafts including pearl earings, ukeleles, pareu's, tee shirts and often there is entertainment.
